The Village of Homer Glen once again passed a proclamation supporting EARTH HOUR 2009 and the International Year of Astronomy (1YA). Both of these efforts are worldwide events. EARTH HOUR is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to bring awareness to climate change and light pollution. The International Year of Astronomy is sponsored by the United Nations to highlight the 400to anniversary of the first use of the telescope by Galileo. IYA will also raise awareness of astronomy, science, and promote the NASA program GLOBE at Night which gathers research on the growing problem of light pollution.
The Village is recommending that on Saturday, March 28"\ 2009 between the hours of 8:30 to 9:30 pm. all residents and businesses in Homer Glen participate in these global events by turning off all non-essential lighting both inside and out.
EARTH HOUR 2008 was a big success in Homer Glen and we are inviting your business to participate with the Village of Homer Glen by once again turning off all of your non-essential indoor and outdoor lighting. Please turn off as many lights and signs as possible. Attached is a list of ways your business can support EARTH HOUR.
Lockport Township High School District 205, Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C, and Will County School District 92 will be participating in EARTH HOUR and the International Year of Astronomy. Telescopes will be set up at select locations and times for students and residents to star gaze. If you would like to help support a local astronomy star gazing event please contact the Village office to volunteer.
As in 2008, the Village will post the names and pictures of all businesses that participate in EARTH HOUR.
Please let the Village know if your business will be participating in EARTH HOUR 2009 in Homer Glen by contacting Bernadette Green at bgreen@homerglen.org. Sign up and become part of the movement!
